Earthquake hit Between Jamaica and Cuba

A M7.7 earthquake hits between Jamaica, the Cayman Islands and Cuba. Based on data from United States Geological Survey (USGS). The quake was reported to be at a depth of approximately 10 km (6.2 miles). The quake was felt in Miami and South Florida. Reports indicate that the shock waves were felt across the Caribbean. In Miami, offices were evacuated but there were no casualties or injuries reported.


Warnings were issued by the Pacific Tsunami Warning Center (PTWC) stated that e "hazardous tsunami waves" were possible for coasts located within 300km (186 miles) of the earthquake's epicenter; these warnings were later withdrawn. However, the possible Tsunami waves could have had an impact in other countries within the region including parts of Mexico, Belize, Cayman Islands, Cuba, and Jamaica.

PTWC update around 20:45 GMT indicated that the "tsunami threat had now largely passed".
